Pierces Hereford Haven, Baraboo, WI

The Pierce Family: Jim, Ken, Sandy and Travis

Pierce’s Hereford Haven (PHH) was established in 1969 as a partnership of Jim, Elaine, and Ken with the purchase of some commercial cows. The registered herd was started in 1971 with the goal of producing cows with performance - good udders and above average milk flow to produce a big calf. These kind of cows where the Victor Dominos, coming from Tjardes Farms, RWJ, E.D. Raulerson, and others. Different genetics have been infused over the years, from prominent herds in the U.S. and Canada to produce the cow herd we have today that is heavily influenced by 29F.

PHH started using A.I. in the late 1970’s to utilize the superior genetics within the breed. All A.I. Work was done by Ken and now by Travis to ensure breeding is precisely timed for optimal conception.

Embryo transfer was the next step; implemented in 1981 to enable them to quickly multiply the genetics of RWJ 859 Victoria 29 the high selling polled cow in the record setting RWJ dispersal. Today donors include Pearl 301, Chastity 638, Pearl 1L, Midwestern Lady 450, and more.

PHH has exported cattle to Brazil, and Argentina and has sold semen on their herd sires in the U.S., Canada, and Brazil.

Pierce’s use the Wisconsin Hereford Association State sale, World Beef Expo sale, and North American Blue Grass Sale (Louisville) as advertising tools to show what is currently happening with our breeding program. We gage our success by the acceptance of our cattle; we have had lead off and high selling lots at all these sales numerous times.

PHH cattle have also held their own in the show ring. Over the years they have had many class winners and champions at Wisconsin and Minnesota State Fairs. They have also been Premier Breeder at the 2008, 2009 Wisconsin State Fair and 2008 World Beef Expo. Jim and Travis had great success at the Junior Nationals including class winners and Champion Bred and Owned and Res. Grand Champion Cow Calf Pair. Travis also won Reserve Senior Showman honors in 2006. PHH has also done well showing nationally including class and division winners including American Hereford Association Show Bull of the Year and Kansas City Royal National Champion Bull with KJ C&L BJ 204 Authentic 294S.

Jim passed away in 2003; Elaine is doing well and still lives in the house on the home farm. They where inducted into the WPHA Hall of Fame in 2004. The partnership today is owned by Ken, Sandy, and son Travis with a lot of help from son Jim when he is not plumbing.

At this time the herd consists of eighty cows. After putting in thirty embryos this year, seventy five percent of the cows are bred A.I to Denver Supreme Champion - About Time, Denver Calf Champion and Fort Worth Res. Grand Champion - Outcross, and the great female producer - Interstate. National Champion Authentic 294S provided natural service to the cow herd after AI and ET was through as well as their most recent champion, a Maui Jim son, Big Papi 819 who was recently chosen Supreme Champion Bull at the 2009 Wisconsin State Fair.
